Metzzikko

Metzzikko is the Nahuatl pronunciation to Mexico; being Nahuatl the language of the Aztecs. What is presently Mexico City was originally the nation of the powerful Aztecs.

-metz, translates to Moon
-zxik, stands for belly button
-ko, means place

So safe it is to say that the word Mexico, with all its symbolism, signifies the place of the belly button of the Moon.

This not to commonly known translation of the word Mexico, which has always followed me, seeking out a visual interpretation which I render in this photograph. The marbles and the snails stand for the two calendars of the Aztecs: the solar calendar and the ritual calendar which like two enmeshed gears would complete a complex cycle and coincide every 52 years. The models’ rotating movement of her hands stands for nature’s never ending energy of birth, life and death.
